eBay Item Descriptions That Sell: A UK Guide for 2026

PUBLISHED: 30 OCTOBER 2026 · LISTINGPRO GUIDES

Your title gets the click and your photos get the attention, but the description is where a buyer decides whether to trust you. A good description answers the questions a buyer would otherwise message you about, sets honest expectations about condition, and reads cleanly on a phone screen. A poor one causes hesitation, questions, and returns. Here is how to write descriptions that do their job for UK buyers in 2026.

1. Write for the phone first

A large share of eBay buyers browse and buy on their phones, where the description sits below the photos, the price and the item specifics. That means buyers scroll to it only when they want reassurance, and they skim rather than read.

  • Lead with the essentials: what the item is, its condition, and what is included, in the first two or three lines.
  • Use short paragraphs and simple lists: long blocks of text are hard to read on a small screen.
  • Keep formatting plain: heavy templates, tiny fonts and wide tables often display badly on mobile.

2. A simple structure that works for almost any item

  1. One line summary: brand, model, size or capacity, and colour, matching your title.
  2. Condition: an honest, specific description of wear, marks or faults.
  3. What is included: box, manual, cables, accessories, and anything that is not included.
  4. Key details: measurements, compatibility, materials or specifications a buyer needs to choose.
  5. Postage and dispatch: how it will be packed and how quickly it goes out.

This order mirrors the questions buyers ask, so most of them are answered before they think to message you.

3. Condition notes are your best protection

Most "item not as described" returns start with a gap between what the buyer imagined and what arrived. Close that gap in writing.

  • Be specific: "small scuff on the left corner, see photo 4" is far better than "some signs of use".
  • Point to photos: refer to the picture that shows each flaw so buyers can see it for themselves.
  • Use the condition field properly: choose the right condition option and use the condition description box for used items, then repeat the important points in the description.
  • Never hide a fault: a flaw disclosed up front rarely leads to a return. A flaw discovered on arrival almost always does.

4. Keep the description consistent with your item specifics

Item specifics power eBay's search filters, and buyers rely on them. If your description says one size or colour and your specifics say another, you confuse buyers and hand them an easy reason to return. Fill in the specifics first, then make sure the description agrees with them. Our item specifics guide covers which fields matter most.

5. What to leave out

  • Keyword stuffing: long lists of search terms make a listing look untrustworthy and do not belong in the description.
  • Aggressive warnings: blocks of capital letters about returns and non-paying buyers put off honest buyers too.
  • Active content: eBay does not allow scripts and similar active content in descriptions, so older templates that rely on them should be replaced.
  • Contact details and links off eBay: eBay's rules do not allow you to steer buyers to buy outside eBay.
  • Claims you cannot back up: only say an item is genuine, new or working if you are sure it is.

6. Write once, reuse well

If you sell similar items regularly, build a short description framework you can reuse: the same headings, the same postage and dispatch line, and a space for condition notes. Reusing the structure saves time and keeps your shop consistent, while the item details and condition notes stay unique to each listing. Pair it with a strong title, as covered in our eBay title guide.

Final checklist

  1. First lines: what it is, condition, what is included.
  2. Short paragraphs and lists that read well on a phone.
  3. Every flaw described specifically and matched to a photo.
  4. Description agrees with the title and item specifics.
  5. No keyword stuffing, no scripts, no off eBay contact details.
